Looking At The Bright Side of Life

Economic crisis, political debacle... It sure gets people feeling down.

I just got news from management that my team will be the "economic sacrificial lamb" to take the "no-bonus" and "pay cut" for the entire company. The 5 of us, (out of the 9 I "used" to manage) will be asked to work 3 days a week. Hence, the pay will be pro-rated accordingly as well.

Oh well, it's not too bad. At least I still have a job.

The better news is that should we find better opportunities out there, the termination notice will not be enforced by HR.

You can say that I should be relieved that I've not lost my job. Well, I am in a way.

However, the other side of me is really feeling quite angry with the boss as he failed to understand the technology our team implemented and didn't know how quite to sell our skills. *sigh*... In fact, we've always felt like the step-kid in the entire company.

Anyway, I'm trying to be upbeat above all this. I still plan to hold a celebration with my team members over the project completed. It'll be a smaller celebration but I feel that we need to celebrate that the project was done.

As usual, my favourite wisecrackers - The
Monty Pythons has a cheery tune to help me kick the blues...

It's a long weekend folks, enjoy yourselves!!!

Like you said, you still have a job.

Now you can spend your free time doing something you've always want to do.

Kesian your team. Some bosses are like that. Either they're blind or they've been poisoned by others to see things differently.

  3. Hi Che-Cheh,

Che-Cheh - Yeah, well... Life goes on.

Anonymous - I told 1/2 the story... I'm trying to get them into other things in the company. There are other openings, so it might not be so bad. Anyway, I don't handle the sales, my boss does. He has to make the decision to keep the company afloat.

Oh well, you can call that failure. Then, I'm a failure.

I'm sorry to hear about your job situation. I know it won't make it any better to say there are many people in your situation but there are. One thing I know - if you are good, you will be sought after regardless. But if you've kept yourself a secret, its time to step up and say something. All the best to you.

  6. Hi Damien, Foong,

Damien - We're a hidden gem. Our skills are hot as we're in a SAP-based company and we're the only few who have it. It seems that the skills that we have are highly sought after by other SAP-based companies. Since the boss doesn't know how to utilize our skills, we just take our skills and go somewhere else.

Foong - Yeah, it's not so bad. For the 3 days we can come into the office to surf the net and etc. The team needs to celebrate and I will see that we do.

  7. I didn't know that the economy is hitting so badly on our company. Anyway, there will always be better opportunities at the outside. It's time to move on.

  9. I hate it when a company is run by a bigot, braggart, basket case that these things can degenerate so badly and yet still have the gall to pin the blame on someone else.

Must be nice, sitting pretty at the top for some, eh?

  10. Hi Lisan, Andrew, Chris,

Lisan - Well, as long as your team is doing ok, this news shouldn't bother you guys too much. Continue to concentrate on your work and deliver your best effort to the customers.

Andrew - Yeah... Always look on the bright side of life!

Chris - If he didn't have those qualities, how could he get to the top? It's a dog-eat-dog world out there and that's the way to get to the top, I'm afraid. In his mind, sacrificing the few to save the hundred is what he had in mind?
