Who's Watching Your Back?
Snoopy is cautiously watching out for Rusty...
Things have been pretty hectic lately ever since the team came up to speed implementing the proper methodology towards the solutioning exercise for the project.
Anyway, we got news that one of the systems is to Go-LIVE earlier than expected and as such, we try to help each other out.
Although things are hectic and stressful, the one thing I like about the team I'm working with is how we watch out for each other. Some of the members often go rushing out to meet with clients or vendors and so, we have to share our information when they come back to the "war room".
The context of the photo I've posted is in the wrong context but what I can say is that when we need support, I can count on my team members.
I've always felt that the success of a team depends on how well we work with one another, not against one another...

Thinking With Thinkpads...
Everywhere you go, remember to keep your power adapter and water bottle...Yes, in the picture above, you'll see a lot of ThinkPads or TPs as we fondly call them. (^.^)
When I took that picture, we were stuck in the same room for about 2 days figuring out our direction. I have to admit that MR4 is like our 2nd home. Kekeke... Yes, we were doing a lot of "thinking" with them TPs.
It has been a while since I've worked in a client site and so, to adjust from having a desk of my own to being a mobile worker took a bit of time to adapt to it. In my 1st job, I was a mobile worker for 2 yrs but when I head back to the office, I always had a place. This time round, when I head back to HQ, I'll also be hot-desking.
My colleagues are great. We all understand that we'll be working together for a long time and so, we're adapting to each others working styles. I enjoy the camaraderie and teamwork. I've been "profiled" as a Rabbit - i.e. loved by all but tends to move too fast.
I'm also a workaholic. I'm the one who will still continue to work even though I'm sick because I've been brought up that if you can still move around - eat, sleep, shit, walk, talk; hence you can go to school/work. So, even though I'm feeling sick now with this cough; I won't stay home. If I do need to stay home, I'll still work.
Well, falling sick just 4 days into work has taught me the lesson to not take things too hard. Besides that, my colleagues now INSIST that I stay away should I feel sick. Makes sense right?

2nd Farewell - Shanghai Bund Style
Ok... This post is late.. LOL! The said farewell happened on 10th April and that was more than 1 month ago!
Well, April 10th was supposed to be my last day but it turned out not to be so as my boss delayed my last day and etc.
Gone were the days when a farewell in the company meant gathering 20-30 people at one go to have 1 big celebration. The last time that happened, we ended up at CPK (California Pizza Kitchen), where that 1 meal came up to RM1,000++ in total.

This time, we had our lunch at Shanghai 10 @ Avenue K and it was with the SAP Support folks. Some of the SAP Delivery were represented by Lee Hwa, while support had SH, Gwen and Chen Yen. Although I didn't really work very closely with them in individual support/projects but being part of the bigger family; we often helped each other out - especially at the Team Lead level where some resource management were required.
All of us were so eager to just get to the makan and JY snapped this photo. Look at Kenneth, so eager to eat....
Finally, a "candid" photo of JY next to boss SH. Boss SH was soo busy that during lunch, he had to step out to make some calls. Well, being the Support Manager; he has a lot on his plate. I remember during that time it was a tough period too.

Can People Change?
Snoopy has changed from being "goody-four-paws" to being a naughty dog. She's not supposed to be sitting on the couch...Now, I'm not sure if anyone has tried to advise or understand these people but what happens if this type of person has decided to change?
In addition to this person's cockiness and brutish ways (He likes to burp after every meal and never excuses himself for it... ewwwww), The Village Idiot is also quite tight with his purse strings.
A couple of days back, someone told me that he actually took some orders for Roti Boy (a popular Mexican bun from a local Malaysian bakery) from some team members and went down to buy it. Now, previously, whenever he was hungry, he would just make a loud announcement and just grab some snacks for himself. Hmmm...
Stranger still, he came back with all the Roti Boy and REFUSED to accept money from the team members who ordered them! *jaw drops*
Immediately after that, it started to rain quite heavily... *KAKAKA* (Unrelated matter)
The BIG question is, can people change? If so, should we be cautious or hope that it will persist?

Nightmare Colleagues?
If you have noticed from my blog, I'm a big geek. The reason why I am so, is not because of the thick glasses (made slim by a wonderful technology called High-Index Plastic); but because of my job scope.
I'm currently a team lead working in some IT company in KL, supposed to be working on some mid-level management stuff (without the title); but deep down, I'm still a techie developer at heart.
I've seen many young developers come and go; worked with many seniors within the technical scope and have seen my fair bit of personalities while at a job or project.
This article about When Good Developers Go Bad, certainly sparked something in me to write this article.
Now, a common assumption or "mis-assumption" of folks about IT workers in general is that, we all tend to be loners, unfriendly, introverted, and some what know-it-all cocky geeks but not all are like that. In fact, just like people in all other industries, our career choice does not govern our personality traits; nor does the personality trait govern what type of jobs we do.
Ironically, I've met folks in the IT industry who are the complete opposite stereotype of what people perceive an IT worker is.
Anyway, I digress.. as usual. (^___^)
So, you're working in a large IT corporation. You will bound to meet someone who has the following traits:
I have this colleague, whom I coin as the "The Village Idiot" as he's someone who loves to challenge weaker members of the team and then; put them down by saying that they're lousy and should just go and die. Whenever he gets a little bit of praise, he'll shout to the heavens (and hell) about his awesome greatness.... *rolls eyes*
Now, whenever a significant challenging task which he has to pick up DOES APPEAR, we often like to shove the "crap" to him with the remark such as "You're so smart-mah, you go and solve the issue-lah...". To which, if he sees that he can't handle it, he'll scoff and say, "This one is not my level.. I don't deal with such problem one..." **rolls eyes more**
In terms of reporting to him, I have been so unlucky not to experience that. However, one of my junior team mates has and it was a nightmare. His brilliance was so overpowering that he kept changing his designs on the fly; confusing the junior member to the point that he nearly wanted to "take out" his supervisor. Due to the constant change, the junior member couldn't deliver his work on time; causing "The Village Idiot" to make remarks such as, "You are so lousy. So simple thing you cannot deliver-ar?"
I couldn't intervene then as it was just out of my scope but ultimately, decided that his leadership skills were not up to par and so, minimized his contact with the other junior members of the team. I feared that should he work with more junior members, he will demotivate more than motivate them to do better.
So, I'm trying out a workaround as suggested by the book "No Asshole Rule: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn't"; i.e. minimize his contact and give him assignments only he himself can complete.
Do you have any nightmare colleague stories to share?
Ohhh... In addition to his cockiness, "The Village Idiot" in my team thinks that he speaks the Queen's English after spending 1 year in the UK. His latest Facebook status states that "Economy very bad, have to tighten bell..." (^___^)

Which Is More Irritating... A Boss Who Never Listens or A Boss Who Always Talks?
I just got a very misleading e-mail from my boss.
My e-mail had just asked one item - "Are you available for this meeting?"
His answer was "Please include bla bla in the conc (conference) call"...
(-_____-)
What the heck?? A meeting may not necessarily mean a conference call.
Besides that, the attached e-mails clearly stated a request for people to ATTEND a meeting AT A CLIENT'S OFFICE.
Now, IF I wanted to inform him about a conference call, I would have worded my e-mail differently, like so,
"Are you available to join in this conference call?"
I don't like to confuse people. Some call me long-winded but I will NEVER confuse people. A meeting and a conference call are two different items, i.e. apples vs oranges.
Now, this is not the first time that such a thing has happened. There were clearly times when he asked me to clarify a situation and once I got to the office and started to explain. He just interrupted and made his assumptions; proceeded to take action without considering the consequences.
He never gave me any chance to speak up and clearly explain things.
And after that, he will ask me, "Why did this happen?". I can't simply tell him, "It's your fault dumb@$$...", right?
So, which is more irritating. A boss who never listens or a boss who can't stop talking?
He clearly has violated one of the most important rule of being a leader - TO LISTEN RATHER THAN TO BE HEARD.
Clearly, if someone does not take the time to listen to you, he is not showing you any respect.

Short Hiatus
Hi all,
Just wanted to put in an entry to state that I'll be taking a short hiatus for the next couple of weeks in order to sort things out at work.
It has been very hectic here with all the new work and team members coming in. I have yet to determine how best to get assistance to run things but for now, it's just me doing all the coordination and technical work. (-.-)
I've been extremely busy and of late, I've been sleeping in the wee hours of the morning trying to catch up with a lot of stuff. Hopefully, it'll get better and I'm positive that it will. (^^)
Anyway, hope to come back during the X'mas week to put in some updates. Meanwhile, take care everyone!
I'll try to stay afloat above water. (^^)

Back to "Kemahiran Hidup" (Living Skills)
Even though my work life is getting a bit sucky now, I managed to get in a bit of fun during the weekends. Although, one day I had to help EV out. However, with EV, there's never a dull moment.
Friday night...
Me: So, what time you want me to come over?
EV: Huh?? What? What? When I wake up-la!
Me: Which is what time......
EV: When I buka my eyes-la! Eh, why are you coming over?
Me: Aiyooo... You forgot ar? You want me to help you with your side-table/drawer thing?
EV: Oh yea hor... Which one am I getting-ar?
Me: I donno!! You decide-la!
Saturday morning...
EV: Hello... Did you just wake up?
Me: Ohhhh Maiii GAWWDDD!!! It's 9:00am already???!!!
EV: Yes... You said you'll come early. People are hungry liao-le.
Me: Sorry.. Sorry!! I'll come now, okie?
EV: BTW, what are we eating?
Me:... Errr.. Food?? Decide later-la!
As some of you may know, there was a peaceful march from Dataran Merdeka to the Agong's palace for Operasi Bersih. I was caught in a bad jam when I got on the Sprint highway. Hmmm...
Anyway, I had a task to do which was to help EV select a proper side table from IKEA. From the very moment I parked my car @ IKEA, I was prepared to face the large crowd in the shopping centre. Oh yea.. Besides that, I had to deal with EV's indecisiveness.
EV: Which one should I get ar?
Me: ** HUFFING AND PUFFING ** OOIII!! Faster decide!! This box is not that light-woei!!!
EV: Put it down-la! Who asked you to carry?
Me: OII! YOU TRY TO CARRY 10KG ABOVE YOUR HEAD!!!!!!
After the long decision making process, she finally settled on one model and I had the joy and privilege to help build it.
On the way back to our car, I saw this at one of the new shops @ Ikano.
If you look carefully, its a Barbie doll stuck in a colourful jelly or jello (as known in the US). I've seen some decorative cakes before, but not one where the cost of the cake included the cost of the Barbie as well. Guess how much the cake was??

It was RM69. Yep.. It is THAT expensive.
However, I got to tip my hat off to the "baker" for having the creativity to sell jelly "cakes".
After a whole day of walking, I was "treated" to a lovely evening of wood working. This certainly brings back memories of this subject back in school - Kemahiran Hidup or Living Skills. Basically, it was a general subject teaching you cooking, electrical, wood-working and sewing. I can't recall which module we had in school but I remembered it was really general.
So, taking the stuff out of the IKEA box, I proceeded to arrange the pieces as per the instructions in the manual. EV was busy with dinner (I managed to squeeze dinner out of her) but she eventually came over to have a look.
EV: Eh... You need my help or not?
Me: Yes, I need you to hold this piece... while I carry the.... what are you doing?
EV: I'm putting in the wooden peg-la. Why it cannot fit?
Me: Eh... Don't simply play play with it. Follow instruction.
EV: Cannot be-ma... Got this hole here, sure can plug this thing in mah.
Me: Oii!!! Don't play play! I don't want to disassemble everything when I find out I have one less screw or something.
EV: You sure or not? :-P
Me: I'm sure... DON'T DOUBT IKEA!! They're very precise one. If the thing needs 5 screws, 5 screws is all you get.
EV: Cehhh... You sure or not???
Me: I'm very sure... Want to bet?
As you can see, I had already got the main body of the sidetable done. All that was left was the drawers. We took some line to line up the drawers as EV didn't have too much of a 3D/depth visualization. That explains why she took Accounting while I took Computer Science back in Uni. (^ ^)
Here's the side picture of the completed sidetable - minus the drawers. Thank goodness this is a small sidetable. I can't imagine having to put up an entire chest of drawers or those large clothes cupboard.... (@___@)

EV: sh*t... Why like that one?
Me: o___O
EV: Alamak... Why this one cannot fit?
Me: What did I just tell you?... NEVER DOUBT IKEA!!! WHAT DID YOU DO??
EV: I didn't see this page! I thought we can skip it!
Me: I said... NEVER DOUBT IKEA. How now???
EV: Take it out-lo...
Lucky it was just the drawer. *phew*
At the end of it all.. This was the result...
I can't recall what time I started building this cupboard. But it was fun. It really brought back memories especially the part where I had to tack in the plywood back.
EV had a hand in it too. She's quite proud that she was able to do something.
The one thing I learned was that EV's dad's toolbox was one of the most complete toolbox ever. Different types of nails, screws and even rubber wall protectors were found in the box. I couldn't find a level but was amazed that the sidetable/drawer out quite stable. The only complaint I have about this model was the quality of the wood. It isn't as heavy as the other one which EV's dad bought some time back but it is good enough. This sidetable/drawer has a tendency to move whenever we slide open/close the drawer because it is very light. Which is why, IKEA had one additional step of anchoring this sidetable to a wall. Hmmmm.
Well.. It isn't too bad but you need patience and an ability to follow instructions carefully...

The one thing I learned was that EV's dad's toolbox was one of the most complete toolbox ever. Different types of nails, screws and even rubber wall protectors were found in the box. I couldn't find a level but was amazed that the sidetable/drawer out quite stable. The only complaint I have about this model was the quality of the wood. It isn't as heavy as the other one which EV's dad bought some time back but it is good enough. This sidetable/drawer has a tendency to move whenever we slide open/close the drawer because it is very light. Which is why, IKEA had one additional step of anchoring this sidetable to a wall. Hmmmm.
Well.. It isn't too bad but you need patience and an ability to follow instructions carefully...

Extremely Tiring Weekend
First of all, Happy Halloween!!!! Of course, we don't "celebrate" Halloween officially in M'sia but am wishing it to all those who do...
I was away during the weekend for my company's team building event @ Genting. Nope, I DID NOT go up there to wish Uncle Lim bye-bye... -____-" However, the thought did occur to some of us. ^____^
The team building event was an event many of us looked forward to because not only we got to go somewhere on the company's expense but it gave us the chance to bond and socialize with our other colleagues whom we didn't necessarily speak to in the office during our regular workday. Certainly, this was the time we got to know people better. And it was fun!
I can't post all my 242 pictures in my blog, and so, I'll just post a few which were quite memorable. (^_^)

I certainly enjoyed myself over the weekend. It was a lot of fun. I managed to interact with different people from the company and had plenty of laughs. There were a few funny videos being captured especially during the "Bollywood Dance" contest. Hahaahaha...
Besides that, underlying the entire weekend, we learned to communicate and work together as a group. We are all linked in a chain and when we're united, we're stronger! :-P

Day 2 was a lot more fun as it involved some outdoor stuff. I didn't participate due to a bad knee but managed to run around to take lots of photos. Hence the 200+ photos in my camera... (^_^)
